CayVPN license and privacy
The software license
CayVPN’s source and accompanying project documentation are available under the MIT License, including commercial use, modification and redistribution subject to its notice requirements. This page does not add personal-use or educational-use restrictions. Bundled third-party software retains its own licenses; notices and applicable source are included with the release.
Your server and responsibilities
CayVPN is software you install on a server you control. Caynetic does not provide server capacity or a hosted VPN subscription through CayVPN. You choose and pay your hosting and upstream providers, manage access, protect your keys and backups, and comply with applicable laws and provider terms.
Use a clean, dedicated Ubuntu 24.04 server. Keep an independent SSH and recovery path. CayVPN 1.x is not upgraded or imported in place; use a new server and new profiles for 2.0.
Data on your server
CayVPN requires no Caynetic account or hosted relay and sends no application telemetry. Your server stores the configuration, encrypted secrets, client identifiers, operational and audit records, connection counters, health results and recovery data needed to run it. Protect the server and owner kit accordingly. This is not a claim that the operating system or your providers keep no logs.
External connections
The server contacts package and release sources, configured DNS resolvers, filter-list sources, selected upstream providers and connectivity-check endpoints as needed. Those services can receive the network requests necessary to perform their role and have their own privacy policies. Public administration is optional; enabling it also uses a certificate authority. Self-hosting does not make your public IP anonymous.
This website and support messages
Website requests and messages you choose to send are separate from the installed VPN. See Caynetic’s website privacy policy for website and contact handling. Never submit private keys, VPN profiles, owner kits, hosting credentials or recovery passphrases through public issues or contact forms.
Cost and contributions
CayVPN’s software is free. Hosting and any paid upstream services are separate. Contributions through Buy Me a Coffee are optional and do not purchase a software license, additional features, hosted service or support guarantee. That provider handles its own payment terms.
Warranty and validation limits
The MIT License provides the software without warranty and contains the applicable liability disclaimer. We do not guarantee anonymity, uninterrupted service, compatibility with every device or provider, or freedom from defects. The release notes distinguish automated and server testing from device, provider and workload acceptance. Verify your own configuration before relying on it.
Documentation and community help
The GitHub repository provides current source, release notes, documentation and community issues. Earlier 1.x videos and PDF instructions do not describe the 2.0 installation. Community help is offered as available and carries no response-time or permanent-hosting commitment.
